modo Privacy Policy

Last updated: 23 October 2018

We’re really glad you use modo, and want to assure you we respect the privacy and the right of control of your personal information.

modo was created to deal with the problem that much of our private data is scattered around the cloud, often unknown to us. So we are probably more paranoid about things like privacy, security, data ownership and control than you are because it is at the heart of what we do. Which is as it should be as we see ourselves as part of the solution not the problem.

So next is information we feel you should be aware of. Please do read it carefully, and if you have any concerns or queries feel free to contact us as described below.

By creating an account with modo, some information needs be collected and recorded to maintain your account and enable its activity. Described below is how we collect, use and handle this when you use our websites, software and services (all of which we'll refer to as "Services").

What & Why

We collect and use the following information to provide, improve, and protect our Services, requested by and contracted to you:

  • Account information: If you provided it to us (for example, via your Accounts optional settings), we collect and associate with your account information like your name, email address, phone number, payment info and physical address. Unlike others, we don’t insist on that info, but can use it to improve your modo experience if you choose to provide it. It is only used by us to provide the Service and is never shared with anyone.
  • Access: Our Service is designed for you to connect your email and cloud storage services ("Connectors") with modo to make it simple for you to access files. Most Connector types (such as Google, Microsoft, Dropbox, Box, Instagram and others) authorise us directly with your permission. For a few other Connector types we securely store the access details you have provided such as usernames or passwords, with your permission. These are needed by modo servers to access the content you have permitted us to add to your modo account. Such information is only used for this purpose and no other. modo staff DO NOT access or process this information; it is used by our automated software only.
  • Services: When you use our Services, we process and transmit the files we find on your Connectors (including stuff like your photos, structured data, documents and emails) and information related to them (for example location tags in photos). When we do this modo staff DO NOT see your documents, photos or emails, it is all handled by our automated servers. And once processed our servers do not keep stored copies of these, they remain securely in their original cloud locations. Instead, our systems store information that they have created on those files such as picture thumbnails and searchable text versions. This is used to provide the amazing visual and searchable database of your stuff in modo. Again, modo staff do not access or process this information, it is handled automatically by computers, indeed much of it is only in machine-readable form.
  • Device information: We also collect information from and about the devices you use to access the Services. This includes things like IP addresses, the type of browser and device you use, the web page you visited before coming to our sites, and identifiers associated with your devices. Your devices (depending on their settings) may also transmit location information to the Services. All of this can help us provide you with features in the Services and also with security. (for example our systems can spot and block someone trying to access your modo account from somewhere else)
  • Cookies: Our websites uses cookies, as almost all websites do, to help provide you with the best experience we can. Cookies help us with things like remembering your language choice on our websites; or understanding how you are interacting with our Services; and to enable features like logging in. In order to better understand our website traffic patterns, we allow selected third parties (such as Google) to store cookies as well. You can set your browser to not accept cookies, but this may limit your ability to use the Services. BY USING OUR SERVICES YOU ACCEPT OUR USE OF COOKIES in order to provide you with the Services. You can find more details on our cookie usage here
  • Marketing: Many of our Services are provided free of charge. These free Services are made possible by the fact that some users choose to upgrade to one of our paid Services. If you register for our Services, we will NOT send you any promotional materials unless you request them. You WILL continue to get communications regarding your account, its settings, features, improvements and usage as well as any security messages. You can update your preferences in the Notifications section of your personal account.
  • Why we need to process your data: We collect and use the personal data described above because you have consented to it in order for us to provide you with the Services in a reliable and secure manner according to our contract. We also collect and use personal data for our legitimate business needs which includes: improving our Services and communications for the benefit of our users; identifying and preventing fraud; and enhancing the security of our systems.
